Session Title: Values-Based Health Narratives for our Future

Presented by: Jessie Landerman, Senior Consultant, Integrated Initiatives

This interactive session will leverage the collective wisdom, curiosity and aspirations of frank attendees to explore why and how to use shared values as foundation for narrative change. Participants will examine the impacts and prevalence of fear, anxiety and individualism in narratives about health and health disparities, and collectively brainstorm new approaches that put aspirational values at the heart of narratives and movements about health. We will practice fundamentals of values-based narrative change by identifying and selecting core values, linking “health problems” to community aspirations, and brainstorming new stories and narratives that position health in broader movements for change.

Drawing on research and tactics from psychology, behavioral science, community organizing and strategic communications, as well as current and retired narratives from the movement to promote the rights and health of LGBTQ and BIPOC communities living with and impacted by HIV, this session will include:

  • Interactive exercises and examples of values-based narratives that establish a shared understanding of the significance and fundamentals of values-based narrative change and its relationship to storytelling, messaging and campaigns.
  • Small group work focused on deep listening in community, identifying and selecting core values, linking “health problems” to community aspirations, and brainstorming new stories.
  • Full group discussion, reflection and resource sharing.
