The Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities Annual Conference: Power Forward

The Funders’ Network (TFN) 2019 Annual Conference explores how philanthropy can leverage the social sector’s collective power to create communities and regions that are truly sustainable and just.

In the following breakout session, TCC Group Partner & Director of Nonprofit Strategy and Capacity Building Julie Simpson will speak with grantees of the Kansas Health Foundation (KHF), a TCC client that’s worked to build organizational capacity and health equity in Kansas over a short period of time.

Burdens Don’t Build Movements: The Case for Capacity Building and Non-Prescriptive Funding

Through its Health Equity Partnership Initiative (HEPI), the Kansas Health Foundation funded ten organizations working on ten different health equity issues: immigration; mental health; rural health; criminal justice; aging population; foster care; juvenile justice; racial justice; early childhood education; and climate change. There were only two goals of the three-year initiative: 1) build the organizational capacities of these ten nonprofits; and 2) help these organizations build relationships, figure out how all of their issues are intersectional, and together build a health equity movement in Kansas. Join three of the HEPI grantees to learn how without typical constrictions grant requirements within they were able to build organizational capacity, secure numerous policy successes, began to change systems, and effectively begun building an intersectional health equity movement in Kansas within two years.
